...Varna is neither caste nor clan. It is a permanent control structure. It grades different endogamous jatis on vertical scales of hierarchy depending on their control over the society and people and thus on the resources of the society. It is a system of exclusion in which the lowest two strata (Shudras and untouchables) are excluded from enjoying the resources of the society.
